RIP Herb Ellis

Herb Ellis's son has confirmed that the great guitarist, above in the classic trio with Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown, died on Sunday. He had been suffering from Alzheimers.

Here's the story from the Washington Post

  1. Thanks for digging out this film of great playing from a great trio in '58, where we are reminded of Herb Ellis's light touch on the fretboard, and also on this occasion, his discreet percussion on the body of his guitar to fill out the trio's sound. A sad passing.

  2. I'm proud to say my first ever live jazz gig pip was bopped by Mr Ellis (at 16ish in 1987ish?) In the middle he played a few bars of the snooker theme tune. I spent the next decades learning jazz guitar. My humble guitar will weep. [thanks to Lance Liddle for bringing to to my attention via Londonazz].

  3. Although I'm just a listener, he was a mentor...
