RIP Gene McDaniels (1935-2011)

American singer-songwriter producer Gene McDaniels died yesterday. His songs from the sixties will stay in the memory: “A Hundred Pounds of Clay,” “Tower of Strength,” “Point of No Return,” and, perhaps above all, “Compared to What,” truly immortalized by Les McCann and Eddie Harris . (above) Here's a tribute from a friend. RIP.

  3. Thanks Karen.

Jess. this may have been shown on BBC4 I don't know. What it is is part of the Montreux archive. They made four hour-long compilations which the German station Sat3 broadcast in 2006 and from which this clip is taken. More about the others HERE

Things have moved on, and the Montreux Festival is releasing a lot more at:

  4. This is a sad loss, but thankfully performances as classic as the one in this article live on for us to appreciate them!
