Among the nineteen musicians to win a Performing Arts Fund Fellowship is Scots-born Birmingham-based drummer Jonathan Silk. The successful application by Town Hall & Symphony Hall – Birmingham / Jazzlines will enable him to "develop his skills as a drummer, composer and big band leader working towards a tour at the end of the year." The nineteen awards will involve the distribution of £190,000. I think I can do those maths. According to the blurb, "the selected organisations will host a Fellow, offering an opportunity for motivated individuals to work under the guidance of professional mentors to develop their skills, showcase their work and experience the reality of working in the music industry across a wide range of genres. "
It's far from being Jonathan Silk's first award. He got a First from Birmingham Conservatoire, and has previously picked up both a 'Yamaha Jazz Scholarship for Outstanding Musicianship' and the 2011 Tony Levin Drum Prize.
