The German Federal Government provides direct funding to small music venues under a scheme called APPLAUS, now in its fifth year. Other governments take note. APPLAUS will distribute EUR1.8m of awards to 86 venues. The scheme received almost 320 applications.

Prof. Dieter Gorny, chairman of the supervisory board of Initiative Musik, was chair of the APPLAUS jury this year. He has said:

"One of the goals of the Initiative Musik is to preserve and nurture artistic creativity throughout Germany for musicians from pop to jazz in a wide variety of musical genres. The APPLAUS awards are an important part of our promotional instruments, because especially the small and medium-sized clubs are cultural venues that have a radiance in all musical scenes. We would like to thank the Minister of State for Culture and Parliament, who have made it possible for us this year to be able to award more than 80 awards for outstanding programme work at APPLAUS 2017."

The jury had significant figures from the German Jazz Scene such as Reiner Michalke, programme emanager at the Stadtgarten in Cologne and pianist Julia Huelsmann.
