A new documentary about Jeff Beck entitled Still on the Run: The Jeff Beck Story had a preview screening last night in London, attended by Beck himself. It will be screened on BBC Four on 27 April(*) and released on DVD on 18 May.

The film includes interviews with Beck himself, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Slash, David Gilmour, Ronnie Wood, Joe Perry, Jan Hammer, Beth Hart, Carmen Vanderberg (who tells her story HERE) and Rosie Bones. There has been a previous documentary about Beck,  A Man For All Seasons - Jeff Beck In The 1960s  from 2016 but this one has more of the feel of an autobiography. It starts and finishes with the great and the good of rock explaining his individuality.

There is an archive interview with George Martin, explaining the genesis of the album Blow by Blow, with an insight into Beck's one-time tendency to throw/smash guitars. For jazz folk there is a treasured letter from Charles Mingus to Beck congratulating the guitarist on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. Beck is unstinting in his praise for John McLaughlin, with particular devotion for the Miles Davis Jack Johnson album and Mahavishnu. And there are the occasional sightings of Jason Rebello.

Still on the Run: The Jeff Beck Story from Eagle Rock Films will be screened on BBC Four on 27 April(*)  and released on DVD on 18 May. Eagle Rock also have Jeff Beck Live at Hollywood Bowl in their catalogue.

The date has been supplied by the production company but the BBC will not be confirming till 18 April.

  1. I hope there’s a mention of Tony Hymas who played with Beck and who continues to make brilliant jazz albums though sadly neglected in the UK.
